Research Interests:

  • My main research project is studying unequal recombination in the Pc locus, a disease susceptibility locus in sorghum. Unequal recombination occurs between two disease resistance paralogs in this locus at a relatively high frequency. Interestingly, the majority of recombination events occur within the more diverged 3’ end of the gene. This region is responsible for pathogen recognition and changes here can lead to evolution of new disease resistance specificities. My project is to identify which developmental, genetic, and environmental factors my focus recombination to this region and on a broader level, to determine how these factors affect unequal recombination rates and distribution in plants.
  • I also have a few side projects studying the parasitic plant Striga hermonthica. One of these projects is evaluating the amount of genetic diversity among populations from Sub-Saharan Africa and another is helping finish assembling plastome sequence.
